When it comes to plastics packaging, Cortec’s “circular economy” opportunities fall into two main categories: recycling and composting. Both seek to repurpose old products into useful new material. Both are great ways for end users to jump into the “circular economy” and improve their environmental footprint!
Cortec® Advanced Films (CAF) and EcoCortec® offer customers in the U.S. or Europe (respectively) the opportunity to become VpCI® Film recycling partners. Those who meet qualifications can send their clean used VpCI® Film and Bags back to their respective plants for reprocessing at their inhouse recycling centers. CAF and EcoCortec® can then turn them into new VpCI® Films and Bags for industrial use. Customers save on waste hauling costs, earn customer credit, and divert plastic from the landfill or incinerator! Companies with a large network of suppliers are ideal candidates because they can specify the use of VpCI® Film for corrosion protection of components, collect them at the central assembly plant, and ship them to Cortec®/EcoCortec® for cost savings and to help them meet their corporate-wide environmental goals.
VCI Film with Recycled Content
Cortec® has also made new strides in its VpCI® Films recycled content. For decades, Cortec® has been adding up to 20% of pre-/ post-consumer recycled content back into virgin film without sacrificing quality. Recently, Cortec® R&D has developed a new, improved film formula that incorporates 30% post-consumer recycled content into the batch. The resulting CorShield® VpCI®-220E Films and Bags are a milestone “circular economy” achievement that meets the U.S. Plastics Pact goal of reaching an average 30% recycled or biobased content in plastic packaging by 2025. In the EU, this target is set for the year 2030.
Certified Commercially Compostable Films
Cortec® also manufactures a variety of commercially compostable films and bags*:
• Eco Film® (organics bin liners and shopping bags)
• Eco Works® 10 and 45 (organics bin liners and shopping bags—10% and 45% biobased content)
• EcoShrink™ (shrink wrap—45% biobased content)
• Eco Wrap® (machine grade stretch film)
• Eco-Corr Film® (corrosion inhibiting film)
All have ‘OK Compost Industrial’ certification from TÜV Austria, confirming that they meet the EN 13432 standard (equivalent to ASTM D6400) for compostability in a commercial composting environment. By using these film products, industries and consumers can replace traditional plastic packaging with a product that can be turned into soil amendment after use. Find Your Place in the ‘Circular Economy’ Environmental responsibility takes many forms. Recycling, reusing, and repurposing are all great ways to responsibly manage waste and minimize plastic pollution in the environment. Cortec® is here to help make it easier to turn old product into new packaging material or soil amendment. Contact us for help finding your place in the circular economy!
* These products are intended to be composted in a commercial composting facility operated in accordance with best management practices. Check locally to see if such a facility exists in your community and if they will accept these products. Not suitable for backyard composting.
